| | Bubu
(1971) ENGLISH LANGUAGE WITH GREEK SUBTITLES Directed by Mauro Bolognini,
Italy Bubu is perhaps one of the
most heartbreaking films I have ever seen, period. Lovely Ottavia Piccolo is Berta,
a young woman who succumbs to prostitution to support and keep the affections
of her lover, Bubu. He decides that he doesn’t want to work another day in his
life and Berta will be his meal ticket. Tragedy strikes Berta every where she
turns after catching syphilis from a client. She appears to find hope and love
with a young college student named Piero, but even that falls through. I could
honestly write ten pages about this film. It is an amazing piece of work and it
touched me on so many levels. The score, though minimal, manages to reinforce
that feeling of hopelessness. What else can I say? I just wish Hollywood would
take a few notes from films of this caliber. ~Melissa Kusia Also starring
Massimo Ranieri and Antonio Falsi as Bubu. Rated R |

(1982) ENGLISH
LANGUAGE Directed by Matt Cimber, USA Set
in 1930’s Arizona, young Kady (Pia Zadora) sets out to find a father whom she
hasn’t seen in ten years. Jess (Stacy Keach) is unsure at first but softens at
her heartfelt pleading. He is mainly uneasy because Kady reminds him so much of
her floozy mother, Belle. She has the same overtly sexual nature and even a child
at seventeen. Her affluent lover won’t marry her and she looks to Jess for comfort.
Of course, it doesn’t hurt when she finds out he is guarding a sliver mine. Weakening
Jess and getting to that silver means the finer things in life for Kady. However,
Kady isn’t a complete swindler. She does have a heart and truly cares for Jess,
even to the point of incest. This leads to a trial that the town won’t soon forget.
Zadora has brief nude scenes and there is the infamous tame bathtub sequence.
The Ennio Morricone score is fantastic, as always and Orson Welles has an amusing
role as the town judge! ~Melissa Kusia

Directed by Jerzy Skolimowski, Poland / UK / West Germany This
is quite an intense look at the dark side of young, obsessive “love”. Mike (Sean

Asher).
His fixation grows to the point of following Susan wherever she goes. Susan is
flattered but has a fiancé and older lover to juggle. That being said, she still
teases Mike. He cannot deal with her lack of interest and tragedy occurs. This
is a film that definitely deserves more than one viewing. Skolimowski does a fine

(1976) UNCUT VERSION
Directed by Steve Carver & Burt Kennedy, USA I had waited for years to
see this follow-up to "Mandingo" (both movies were based on novels by
Kyle Onstott and star Ken Norton) and after finally getting to see it I thought
it was much better than what I had heard! Drum is a young boy who, unbeknownst
to him, was born of a black father and a white mother (Marianna, played by Isela
Vega). The mother becomes the madam of a brothel and has Drum raised by a black
woman posing as his birth mother. He grows up to be an enormously strong but very
gentle person. After being forced into a fight with a slave named Blaise (Yaphet
Kotto who is excellent) by a gay slave trader, Drum is sent away to be the butler
to slave breeder Hammond Maxwell (well portrayed by Warren Oates). It is here
that most of the movie takes place, as Oates attempts to get to know his ex-prostitute
but now prim-and-proper new wife (played by Fiona Richmond) and deals with his
naughty blond daughter (played by a very young looking Rainbeaux Smith) who spends
most of her time prick-teasing the male slaves! With an unfortunately short appearance
by Pam Grier. Rated R |

Malthe (Zülow Börje Ahlstedt), a kindly ex-convict that works in the city sewers.
Though quite the odd couple, the two are kindred spirits that teach each other
the importance of love and acceptance. I left the film questioning the nature
of the relationship between Emma and Malthe. Don’t get me wrong, nothing inappropriate
is every insinuated. However, there is a sense that the love is more than friendly.
I suppose it doesn’t really matter what the answer is. The film is a treat due
to solid plot and acting. The film is set in the 1930s and Jacobsen captures the
era soundly. Films that are this poignant hardly ever come along. ~Melissa

An Italian
reporter in Los Angeles (Robert Hoffman) investigates the supposed car “accident”
that kills an old friend of his. It seems his buddy had left Italy to become the
spokesmodel for a huge chemical products corporation only to get spoiled by his
new wealth and fame! The new celebrity’s scandalous behavior causes the reporter
to believe his buddy was bumped-off for financial reasons. Through a series of
flashbacks we learn that almost everybody had a reason for wanting him dead! Had
this been a strictly U.S. production, this probably would’ve been a typical t.v.
movie-ish yawnfest, but Italian director De Martino keeps things lively and swingin’!
The second half really cuts loose! A good amount of action and some nudity (with
a gratuitous psychedelic orgy scene common to the Italian flicks of this era)
keeps this stylish thriller’s roots firmly planted in Euro-trash territory! Recommended!

depression and he finds happiness in life again. But why is he so fixated on the

fact that he never makes sexual advances towards her but remains a "gentleman"?
A classy drama from Spain with Ugo Bologna, Pierre Clémenti, José Luis López Vázquez,
Maria Monti, Paul Müller, Bárbara Rey and future Italian horror director Michele
Soavi. This wide-screen version seems to be more of a director's cut that contains
more nudity from Katya Berger and excludes
some of the more gratuitous mildly erotic flashback flashes that the man has from
his past (we include these scenes as an extra on the DVD-R along with the trailer).

Lola
(aka Twinky, 1969) Directed by Richard Donner, Italy / UK Set in
London, Lola tells the story of a middle-aged pornography writer (Bronson) falling
in love with and marrying a sixteen-year-old girl. The couple has the best of
intentions despite their age difference. Unfortunately, reality sets in and their
happiness starts to deteriorate. Charles Bronson stretches his acting bounds by
playing such an unusual character. The viewer gets to experience his sensitive
side. Susan George gives a decent performance as the love struck youngster, as
well. Though this film is entertaining, it didn’t “wow” me as much as similarly
themed titles. I found Laura and Little Lips (also offered on this site) to be
more satisfying examples of this taboo genre. The sex content isn’t gratuitous.
If you are looking for a film with lots of nudity and sleaze this isn’t it. All
that being said, Lola is still worth a look. ~Melissa Kusia To
me "Lola" (known in the UK as "Twinky") was intended as more
of a comical drama showing the mishaps of the generation gap. I think on that
level it works very well! This is the movie that really put Susan George on the

Road to Salina (Sur la

Lautner, France / Italy A young drifter stops at a house / restaraunt / gas

after a long stretch. The boy, partly out of sympathy for the sad woman, and partly
out of desperation, goes along with it and pretends to be her son. Things take
an unexpected turn when Hayworth's daughter, played by Mimsy Farmer, turns up.
An intelligent and unpredictable film with an excellent Pink Floyd-ish score by
Ian Anderson and some very sexy scenes with Mimsy Farmer. Recommended and an absolute
MUST for Mimsy Farmer fans!! DVD-R includes the original theatrical trailer. Rated

(To Prosopo tis medusas, 1966) ENGLISH DIALOGUE Directed by Nikos
Koundouros, Greece This film is set on a Greek island where three men are
transfixed by a young woman. The woman used to date the brother of one of the
men but he is now dead. Of course, the brother doesn’t know of the other’s fate
and wonders what became of him. Beyond this, the film is just a conglomeration
of scenes woven together to create a bizarre and dark atmosphere. The film is
shot in a way that makes it seem like a “making of” segment one moment and a real
film the next. The film crew and director’s marquis are visible in many scenes.
This is a film that takes repeat viewings but there is an obvious sexually destructive
element. Surprisingly, there is some very frank sexuality. The director displays
full male and female nudity and a very realistic sex scene. ~Melissa Kusia |
